How our Design Tool Works
-
Step 1
Input your site data, including the site area in acres, the location, and the proposed impervious surface area in acres. Then, select the type of rainfall data required.
-
Step 2
Once you’ve confirmed and inputted your site parameters into the Design Tool webpage, press the run button to run the automated calculations for your detention pond sizing and design results.
-
Step 3
Review your results and verify that they are acceptable by reviewing the previewed design. Once the design has been deemed satisfactory, purchase and download the detention pond engineering report for your design.
FAQs
What is the design methodology for the sizing of the detention pond?
The calculations provided have been developed utilizing the rational method. This method applies to sites typically less than 200 acres. Sites greater than 200 acres should not be evaluated with this tool and require additional analysis to determine appropriate detention pond design sizing.
How accurate is this design?
Given the speed of the design calculations, the design of the detention pond has been sized conservatively by utilizing a higher runoff coefficient (C) to account for future increases in impervious surfaces, unexpected rainfall patterns, or unknown site conditions. In addition, a safety factor in additional volume (20%) has been included to buffer against errors in assumptions or unforeseen conditions.
What is provided in the engineering report?
Once purchased, the engineering report provides a breakdown of the assumed parameters, the calculations that were made, and a table with a range of sizes for square and rectangular standard trapezoidal detention ponds. Graphics of the detention pond are also included in the report.
Can I construct from the engineering report?
No, the design must gain approval from the respective local jurisdictions and be approved for construction before construction. If additional assistance is needed to advance the design to construction and develop signed and sealed engineering plans, please contact us for additional services.
